About us
This programme runs under ‘The KEYS Project’ which is a UK registered charity established in 2013. The KEYS Project was set up by Dr Stephen Smith, a GP specialist in substance misuse.
KEYS is a Christian charity that works to bring freedom to those caught in addiction through providing unique integrated medical, spiritual and community support.
Medical - Teams of volunteers are trained and equipped to provide medically supported drug and alcohol detox, as well as to support clients before and after the detox phase. They use protocols developed by clinical experts, and always involve the client’s own GP (or drug clinic) who organises any tests and prescribes any necessary medication.
Spiritual - Our Project is primarily aimed at helping those who are making an effort to improve their lives. They may be already on or are open to a spiritual route to recovery. Clients are supported through a Christian 12-step recovery programme in weekly Recovery Groups to address the complex issues that are often at the root of addiction. We also provide various forms of inner-healing and prayer ministry for those that want it.
Community - Community support is the vital third ‘KEY’ to the programme. Having the long term support of a loving community is a massive boost to anyone seriously wanting to make the lifestyle changes necessary for a future life free from drugs and alcohol. Our Befrienders also help clients to access local community support that will help them in their recovery journey.

Dr Smith writes:
“Through my work in drug clinics and in particular, from work in an in-patient drug and alcohol detox unit, I recognised that a large number of people are seeking a spiritual route to recovery (especially via the 12-steps used by Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous). I was also aware that many church groups are offering spiritual as well as practical support to people caught up in addictions. I therefore sought to facilitate the work of these groups by setting up a supportive medical service, which has become ‘KEYS Community Detox’. This involves helping small church teams to support their clients by liaising with the client’s own GP or prescribing drug clinic."
